CURRENT LOCATION: JACKSON HOLE, WY
We're back in the USA! We hiked back into the Bugs after the last post only to be stuck in more poopey weather. We decided to pack up our base camp and head south in hopes to climb on some mountains without the gnarly weather. We giddily jumped into halfy and to the Tetons we went. We arrived to Jackson Hole and immediately hiked into the Garnet Canyon for 7 miles to the lower saddle just beneath the GRAND TETON! at 11,600ft. The hike was beautiful, full of water falls and tasty green treats such as alpine lily's, which taste a bit sour, but yummy nonetheless.
Our first objective was to climb the direct exum ridge and summit the Grand. We awoke at 5am and started up the mountiain. The climbing varied from chimney, corners, face climbing on an exposed black wall, to knobs galore. The difficulty never exceded moderate (5.8), and being confident and comfortable we moved fast over the terrain by simul climbing.
We were 3/4 up the route when the storm we were warned about rolled in. We tried to ignore it with the summit on our minds, but we knew that the ominous patch of storm clouds heading straight for us were bringing in a beast. We couldn't bail from how high we were, so we downclimbed a bit to a ramp called wall st. that would take us to a descent gully and back to our dry tent.
This was very hard for us as we had lots of energy and motivation to continue and felt we could possible bag the summit before the storm hit, but being this was our first time in the Tetons, we had no idea about weather patterns in this range. THe rain started as we scarmbled down the gully, feeling really bummed. The rain and the gnarly clouds which dunped it, passed through quickly and blue sky returned. We stopped and without any words knew what each other was thinking...we should go back up and go for for the summit....we wanted it bad, and knew we could go fast. So we jammed back up the ramp to the ridge high on adreniline. We got a better view to the west when we reached the point we had bailed from and realized that the blue sky we witnessed was just a big ol sucker hole and that another set of strom clouds were on their way. We decided against the bust to the summit and once again headed down the gully.
We laughed all the way down as usual, agreed that it was the best idea and that we would get another stab at the summit when the good weather gods allowed. We are currently plotting and scheming our next mtn adventure. We are going to keep on keepin on till the moutnains become to icy to climb. Stay tuned.
